CHARLOTTE, NC -- GW led most of the way and had the final shot but fell short, 72-68, to Charlotte in an Atlantic 10 game Wednesday night at Halton Arena.
With 20 seconds left and the game tied at 68-68, GW had possession but a steal by Charlotte's DiJuan Harris and subsequent foul by the Colonials allowed the 49ers to escape with the four-point victory after trailing for most of the contest.
The Colonials raced out to a 19-6 lead to start the game before the 49ers rallied all the way back to take a pair of brief one-point leads at the 6:32 and 5:32 marks. The Colonials closed the first half with a 7-3 run to take a 35-32 lead at the break. The 49ers converted just 1-7 from the line in the opening half.
GW senior Damian Hollis led the Colonials with a team-high 23 points, 16 coming in the first half. Freshman Lasan Kromah added 11 points and four steals for GW.
Charlotte (17-5, 7-1) was led by Shamari Spears' 31 points, 19 in the second half. Spears single-handedly kept Charlotte in the game with a variety of fade-away jumpers and a pair of three-pointers. Charlotte sank 7-21 three-pointers including 2-of-2 by Spears. Harris added 11 points for the 49ers. Charlotte sophomore Derrio Green, the A-10 Player of the Week who was coming off a 34-point performance at UMass last weekend, was held to just seven points on 1-7 shooting. His lone field goal, a three-pointer from the right corner with 48 seconds remaining, tied the game at 68-68.
GW (12-9, 2-6) shot 39.7 percent (25-63) for the game. The Colonials committed just eight turnovers in the game compared to 13 for the 49ers.
GW hosts Duquesne (11-10, 2-5) on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 1500 AM and 820 AM as well as online at www.FederalNewsRadio.com. Live video and Gametracker stats available at GWsports.com.
