WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's basketball will host 13 games at newly renovated Charles E. Smith Center and face 14 teams that qualified for postseason play last season as part of its 2009-10 schedule, released by second-year head coach Mike Bozeman today.
"This year's schedule is once again very challenging, but with such a young team it will present another set of challenges," said Bozeman. "However, a difficult schedule is something our team and our fans look forward to and expect from GW. Our talented, young players will be introduced to college basketball right away, which is why they chose GW in the first place."
The Colonials could potentially face nine teams (Michigan State, Marist, Tennessee, Auburn, Rutgers, Villanova, Charlotte, Temple and Xavier) that reached the 2009 NCAA Tournament and six possible opponents (Coppin State, Oklahoma State, Dayton, Duquesne, Richmond and St. Bonaventure) that qualified for the 2009 Postseason WNIT.
GW plays six of its first seven games away from Smith Center, beginning with a Nov. 17 trip to Denton, TX, to face North Texas for its season opener. The Colonials return to the District to host Coppin State for their home opener two days later, then head to Athens, OH, to battle Ohio University Nov. 22.
For the third time in seven seasons, the Colonials will travel to Grand Bahama Island in the Bahamas for the Junkanoo Jam Nov. 27 and 28. GW will battle Michigan State in the opening game Nov. 27, then face either Oklahoma State or Marist the following evening.
Following the Junkanoo Jam, the Colonials travel directly to Knoxville, TN, for a Dec. 1 showdown at Tennessee. It is the team's fourth visit to Thompson-Boling Arena and marks the eighth time in the last nine years the Colonials will face the Lady Volunteers during the regular season. GW then visits Auburn, whom it has faced four times the past three seasons, at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Dec. 5.
The Colonials play five of their next six games at home, starting Dec. 8 against Marshall, followed by Mount St. Mary's Dec. 20. A Dec. 22 visit to George Mason precedes a three-game home stretch with Western Kentucky (Dec. 28), Rutgers (Dec. 30) and Rice (Jan. 2). GW rounds out non-conference play at Villanova Jan. 21.
The 14-game Atlantic 10 schedule features a home-and-home series with Richmond, as well as three home games and three road contests against the league's other six postseason qualifiers. GW hosts Dayton (Jan. 9), Charlotte (Jan. 16), La Salle (Jan. 24), Xavier (Feb. 3), Fordham (Feb. 20) and Saint Louis (Feb. 23). The Colonials visit Rhode Island (Jan. 12), Massachusetts (Jan. 27), Saint Joseph's (Jan. 30), Duquesne (Feb. 6), St. Bonaventure (Feb. 14) and Temple (Feb. 27). GW's game at Duquesne Feb. 6 will be broadcast on CBS College Sports at 12:00 pm.
The top 12 teams in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season will advance to the 2010 A-10 Women's Basketball Championship, held at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD, March 5-9. It marks the first time in the A-10 Championship's 28-year history that the event will be held at a neutral site. The A-10 Championship semifinals will air on CBS College Sports, while the title game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Information on season ticket packages and club membership will be released in mid-September.
