ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team (20-30, 9-13 A-10) returned to action on Saturday at Barcroft Park and dropped a 4-1 decision to the Xavier Musketeers. Senior Pat Lehman got the start and threw eight innings and allowed just three earned runs while striking out six.
The Colonials struck first in the opening frame when junior Tom Zebroski lead off the game with a single and moved second base on a groundout by senior Bryan Hwang. Hot hitting Sean Rockey drove him home with an RBI single to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead. It was Rockey's sixth straight plate appearance in which he reached base.
That lead held until the fourth inning when the Musketeers pushed two runs and took a 2-1 lead keyed off a two-run double by John McCambridge. Xavier also added a run in the fifth inning off two Colonial errors and extended their lead to 3-1 after five innings.
Xavier closer Jordan Conley came in and recorded his 10th save of the season to preserve the win for the Musketeers.
Redshirt junior Sean Rockey also continued his hot streak by going 2-4 to raise his season average to .438.
The Colonials will return to the field tomorrow when they face the same Musketeer squad at 12:00 p.m at Barcroft Park. It will be the last A-10 home game of the 2009 season.
