WORCESTER, MA - George Washington Women's Rowing competed in the ECAC Metro Cup last Saturday, May 2. This was the team's first trip to the regatta and provided it with an opportunity to gauge improvement over the course of the season and prepare for Eastern Sprints on May 17.
The Colonials novice eight of Ayla Richards, Anne Kuznicki, Lisa VanArsdale, Morgan Ellis, Courtney Pendray, Estee Gabel, Sarah Hill, Rachel Roth and Mackenzie Hovermale advanced to the grand final where they finished fifth overall.
"This was a fun and productive weekend for our novices who continue to make great improvements each week," said novice coach Maria Bokulich. "I was very pleased to see their determination to carry over a great week of practice to their heat and then on to their final. Both our novice eight and novice four are peaking at the right time in the season. They've worked hard the past eight months and are eager to see what they are capable of doing in these final races after all the time and effort they have put in this year. I'm excited to see what they can do next week."
In the varsity eight event, the GW crew of Katie Martin, Alexandra Hamilton, Elizabeth Austin, Ellen VanCleave, Carrie Rollman, Allison Miedema, Stephanie DeFlora, Rhonda Crittle and Bonnie Scott passed several crews in the last 500 meters to finish fourth in the petite final and 10th overall.
"This was a great race and it allowed our team to compete against many of our peers," said head coach Rob McCracken. "I thought the varsity eight rowed a great second 1,000 meters in the petite final and it was great to see them pass several boats coming into the final sprint. We need to replicate what we did at the end of that race on a daily basis and more importantly during our last two races. I'm looking forward to seeing how we finish out the season."
The Colonials return to action on May 10 when they take on Georgetown for the 1998 Cup. The U.S. Naval Academy will also participate. The race is tentatively scheduled for 9:00 am on the Potomac River. However, the time and location of the race may change due to high water levels on the river.
