Softball Splits A-10 Doubleheader at Dayton

DAYTON, OH - George Washington softball split Atlantic 10 doubleheader with Dayton, Saturday, winning game one, 3-2, but dropped game two, 9-2.
In game one, Amanda Gabriel (7-13) pitched a complete seven-inning game striking out nine Flyers. Gabriel allowed six hits, two earned runs and walked two.
Krissy Mackiewicz kept the third inning going with a two-out single and only had to wait one pitch before Tori Sensi doubled her home for the the first GW run of the game.
The Flyers answered in the bottom half of the inning to push their lead to 2-1.
Sensi started the fifth inning off with her second double of the game. Katie Terrazas followed with a single and advanced to second on the throw while Sensi advanced to third. Elisa Van Kirk was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Gabriel grounded out into a double play, getting Van Kirk at second, while Sensi scored the tying run.
GW got on the board again in the sixth inning when Amanda Holst hit an one-out double to right center field. Mackiewicz singled Holst home to score the go-ahead and eventually winning run of the game.
Game two of the doubleheader saw Heidi Penna (1-5) face five batters in the first inning without recording an out before being relieved by Kara Clauss. Clauss went on to throw six innings in the no decision, striking out two.
Dayton got on the board first, quickly posting four runs in the first inning.
GW scored in the third inning off a Krissy Mackiewicz double that scored Amanda Holst from third. Dayton answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, to keep the lead at four runs, 5-1.
The Colonials (12-25, 3-9 A-10) got their second run of the game in the sixth inning after Mackiewicz tripled to start the inning. Elisa Van Kirk hit a two-out single, to collect the RBI.
Dayton put up four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach for the Colonials for good.
GW returns to the field on Wednesday, April 15, in College Park, MD, facing Maryland for a night doubleheader with the first game starting at 5 p.m. The Colonials then head on the road to face Massachusetts on Friday, April 17, at 3 p.m. and on Saturday, April 18, at 12 p.m. GW travels to Kingston, RI, to face Rhode Island for an afternoon doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
