
Softball Splits Day One of Colonial Classic

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University softball team split its two games in day one of the 2009 Colonial Classic. The Colonials defeated Army, 5-2, to improve to 3-6.
In game one against the Army Black Knights, Amanda Gabriel helped herself out by hitting a home run in the top of the second. The home run was the first of the season for Gabriel. She also struck out a career high 13 Black Knights.
The third inning was started off with a double from Jordyn O'Donnell. Jamie Yaniga came in to pinch run for O'Donnell then was pushed ahead by a sac bunt by Krissy Mackiewicz. Carrie Higdon continued the inning by singling up the middle and scoring Yaniga. Katie Terrazas tripled home Higdon to give the Colonials a 3-0 on Army.
With Elisa Van Kirk up to bat, Terrazas stole home to score the third run of the inning before Lauren Wilson, who walked to get on base in her at-bat, was called out while attempting to steal second.
Van Kirk scored Terrazas in the top of the sixth after Terrazas reached on an error by the Army leftfielder.
Army scored its only runs in the bottom halves of the fourth and fifth innings.
