CHARLOTTE, NC - The George Washington women's basketball team travels to Charlotte, NC, and Halton Arena this weekend for the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship. The fifth-seeded Colonials face No. 12-seed Rhode Island in a first-round game Friday at 2:30 pm.
GW (17-12, 9-5 A-10) makes its 27th consecutive appearance in the A-10 Championship and seeks its fifth title overall and first since 2003. The Colonials are 32-22 all-time in their 26 trips to the A-10 tournament, but have never entered the event as a No. 5 seed.
The Colonials are led by senior Atlantic 10 All-Conference selections Jessica Adair and Antelia Parrish, who were named to the first and third teams, respectively, in the league-wide announcement Wednesday. Adair's first-team nod was the third of her illustrious four-year career, making her the fourth player in school history and 10th in A-10 history to earn the honor at least three times. The 6-4 center leads GW with 13.2 points on 56.8 percent shooting, 7.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 29 games this season.
Parrish received third-team recognition after ranking second on GW with 11.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game during the regular season. Her team-leading 50 three-pointers are the 17th-most in a single-season in school history and 97 career triples already rank 11th all-time in just 57 games at GW.
Senior Yolanda Lavender is the team's assist leader with 86 despite playing only 19 games since becoming eligible after sitting out the fall semester per NCAA transfer rules. The former honorable mention All-ACC selection at Wake Forest has handed out five-or-more assists in 12 of her 19 games and adds 9.7 points per game.
A-10 All-Rookie Team selection Tara Booker and two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week honoree Tiana Myers round out the Colonials' starting lineup. Booker has started 12 of 14 conference games and averages 7.9 points on 42 total three-pointers and 5.4 boards, while Myers has started 23 of 27 games this season, chipping in 7.2 points per game.
