CHARLOTTE, NC - The George Washington University softball team was defeated by the Charlotte 49ers, 3-0, Friday evening at the 49ers Softball Field.
The Colonials (7-13, 0-1 A-10) could not seem to get any offense going against the 49ers (14-5, 1-0 A-10) in the Atlantic 10 conference opener for both teams. GW's first hit came in the fourth inning by senior Tori Sensi when she singled to the Charlotte second baseman. Freshman Kara Clauss followed with a hit of her own, but was left stranded when Sensi tried to advance to third base.
In the fifth inning, freshman Lauren Wilson singled to start the inning, then stole second and advanced to third on junior Amanda Gabriel's sac bunt. The Colonials were unable to score Wilson from third as the next two batters went down on strikes.
After walking to get on base in the sixth, senior Carrie Higdon stole second base to tie freshman Krissy Mackiewicz with team-leading six stolen bases this season.
Gabriel took the lost in five innings of work, allowing six hits, three runs (two earned) and striking out five. Clauss pitched the seventh inning in relief while giving up one hit and striking out one.
The Colonials and the 49ers play again Saturday, in Charlotte, NC, at 12:00 p.m. at the 49ers Softball Field.
