TAMPA, FL - The George Washington University softball team (6-9) went to extra innings to get the win 1-0 against Long Island in game one of Pool C in the South Florida Under Armour Showcase, Friday.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, junior Amanda Gabriel was placed on second, as the last out of the seventh. Junior Amanda Holst laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Gabriel to third safely. It was freshman Krissy Mackiewicz's single through the left side that allowed Gabriel to score and the Colonials get the win.
The Colonials had gotten runners on base four of the seven regulation innings, but was unable to get any farther than 60 feet away from home plate. Long Island stranded nine runners to GW's six.
Freshman Kara Clauss (3-4) got the win, throwing eight innings, allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out seven. Her seven strikeouts was one shy of her GW-career high eight strikeouts against Army on March 8 in the Colonial Classic.
GW returns to the field for their second game of the day in the USF Under Armour Showcase at 1 p.m. against East Tennessee State.
