CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -The George Washington softball team fell to Virginia, 6-3, Tuesday in game two of a doubleheader. The teams combined to commit seven errors. Tuesday's games were originally scheduled on Mar. 1, but were postponed due to inclement weather.
The Colonials got on the board early with a Carrie Higdon home run 220 feet to straight-away centerfield in the first inning. It was Higdon's fourth career round-tripper.
GW got aggressive on the basepaths in the fourth inning and scored two runs after a pair of double steals to tie the game at 3-3. GW senior Tori Sensi was credited with a stolen base when Katie Terrazas scored on a throwing error by Cavaliers' catcher Alison Pittman. Sensi then scored on a throwing error in attempt to prevent Amanda Holst from stealing second base.
Each time the Colonials scored, the Cavaliers answered run for run. It was the runs that Virginia scored in the third and fifth innings that put the win out of reach for GW.
Higdon also pitched for the Colonials in game two. She went four and a third innings,and allowed eight hits, six runs (four earned), walked two and struck out two. Heidi Penna came in the game in relief, throwing an inning and two-thirds of hitless relief while issuing two walks.
The Colonials (5-9) travel next to Tampa, FL to play in the South Florida Under Armor Showcase tournament, Mar. 13-15. GW first faces Long Island (5-7) in the tournament at 11:00 a.m. Mar. 13. The Colonials will also play East Tennessee State, Florida International, the host Bulls of USF and Boston University in the tree-day event.
