CHAPEL HILL, NC - The George Washington University softball team fell to the University of North Carolina, 8-0 in five innings, in its 2009 season opener and opening game of the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, NC, Friday.
"Overall we played OK," head coach Kim Staehle said. "We held UNC to only two runs in the first inning."
Junior pitcher Amanda Gabriel was in the circle for the Colonials and kept two of the Tarheels' and ACC best hitters off the base baths all game.
"Amanda threw exceptionally well for us today," Staehle said. "She came out tight and she felt it, but she still threw the ball well."
Sophomore Katie Terrazas and freshman Ali Waterman were the only base runners for the Colonials, drawing walks off of UNC's pitcher Constance Orr.
GW is back in action Saturday in the Carolina Classic against Penn State at 12:30 p.m. and California at 5:30 p.m.
