WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington University women's soccer team fell to the University of Richmond, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field. Richmond improved to 8-5-1 overall, 4-1-0 in Atlantic 10 play, while GW fell to 4-5-4 overall, 1-2-2 in conference play.
The Spiders got on the board first late in the first half off a blast from the top of the box from Jen Ruhe, after she was fed the ball from midfield by teammate Liza Koch.
In the second half Richmond got up two goals on GW with a goal from Emily Dale, who intercepted a GW pass intended to clear the ball up field.
Under two minutes later, the Colonials set up for a Molly Bruh corner kick to the back goal post. Richmond goalkeeper Melissa Pacheco, knocked away GW's Sierra Smidinger's header attempt but the ball bounced to Ashley Starks. Starks flicked it to Jillian Morgan who put it in the top corner for the goal out of reach of Pacheco.
GW's Emily Gower made a timely slide tackle late in the second half on Richmond's Shondel Archer, knocking the ball away just enough to reroute the ball, stopping her break away.
Much of the game was played at the heart of the field, impacting the amount of corners each team earned. The Colonials totaled four corners while the Spiders only had 3.
The Colonials next play on the road at Saint Louis, Oct. 16. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. EST.
