Gymnastics Announces Yearly Team Awards, Captains for 2009

WASHINGTON, DC - The 2008 George Washington Gymnastics Team Awards were presented May 1 at its annual season-ending banquet. Each award winner was selected by her teammates for their contributions throughout the course of the 2008 season.
Freshman Leslie Delima was named the team's Top Performer on the all-around. The lone full-time competitor on all-around for the Colonials, Delima qualified individually for the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Gainesville, finishing 16th out of 28 competitors. More impressively, she placed 13th out of 42 on beam with a 9.800, and 18th of 42 on floor with a 9.775. The native of Virginia Beach, VA was named first-team All-EAGL on floor with three top-two finishes, and second-teamm All-EAGL in the all-around with seven top-three finishes, including a team-high four first place performances.
Junior Kristen Simpson was named the Top Performer on vault. A first-team All-EAGL selection on the event, Simpson qualified individually for NCAA Regional competition and tied the school record with a 9.950 against Pittsburgh on Feb. 24. The record-tying performance was the best mark on any event of any EAGL gymnast this season. A three-time Academic All-EAGL selection, Simpson never scored below a 9.725 on vault this season and recorded seven top-three finishes, including three victories.
Sophomore Christa Devine earned the team's Top Performer award on the uneven bars after being named second-team All-EAGL on the event. Devine posted a 9.740 Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) on bars with a season-high 9.825. A consistent three-event specialist for the Colonials, Devine recorded at least a 9.725 in seven of 11 meets in her second-year at GW.
The Top Performer award on the balance beam went to sophomore Lindsay Tom. Tom was one of four full-time competitors on beam, and recorded a season and career-high 9.750 on the event in the Colonials' regular season finale at Towson. Also a very consistent performer, Tom also saw spot time on both the vault and floor exercise this season.
Senior tri-captain McKenzie Parrack was named GW's Top Performer on floor exercise. A three-event specialist form Dallas, TX, Parrack recorded three top-two finishes, including a victory in a dual meet at home against conference rival Pittsburgh. The 2008 Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) President, and a four-time Academic All-EAGL selection, concluded her collegiate career on a high note, posting three straight 9.825 performances on floor, a new career high.
Sophomore Megan Quinn was also award the Lindsey Ferris "Attitude is Everything" award. This award is prsented each year to the gymnast who most exemplifies Lindsey's vibrant spirit for life, sincere passion for her sport, and selfless dedication to her team. Quinn will also be recognized for this award at GW's home opener next season in January.
The Coaches Award went to sophomore Danielle Parretti. After missing her entire freshman season, Parretti saw spot time on both beam and vault as a sophomore. A native of Milford, MA, Parretti recorded a career-high 9.775 on beam at Towson, good for a second place finish. This award is not given annually, only when the circumstance arises. The honor is presented to the athlete who works to their fullest ability, with their given talents, and steps up to use those when the team needs her most.
In other news, seniors Bree Plotsker and Kristen Simpson have been voted to represent the 2009 sqaud as team co-captains.
