WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington softball team dropped a wild one to Fordham, 13-4 on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex. The loss dropped GW to 12-27 overall and 8-10 in the Atlantic 10, and knocking the Colonials out of contention to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
A game, which featured eight errors and just eight earned runs combined between the two teams, nearly symbolized the season for the Colonials as they committed five errors. The season finale was not without its great moments for GW.
All five seniors, who were appearing in their final home game, got the start, even Colleen Kegler, who made her season debut after missing the entire season with an injury. Kegler started in right field and was replaced by sophomore Amanda Holst after the first pitch.
Senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis went 3-3 with a double, an rbi, and a walk. Her RBI double in the second inning cut Fordham's lead to 2-1. The two-base knock also moved Halkiotis past former Colonial Elana Meyers alone in first place on the GW career doubles list with 33. The RBI on the same double moved her past Meyers for second on the all-time RBI list with 71. Halkiotis finished her career with 153 hits, second most all-time.
Classmate Jackie Yaniga went 2-4 on the day, giving her an even 150 career hits, becoming the third Colonial to record such a mark.
Fellow senior Katie Miller also collected two hits, while senior Caroline Howe picked up her first two hits of the season, after missing most of the season with an injury.
GW tied the game at 2 in the third on a sacrifice fly to deep center by sophomore pitcher Amanda Gabriel, scoring Terrazas from third.
Three costly errors in the fourth allowed the Rams to erupt for five runs in the fourth inning, giving them a 7-2 lead, an advantage they held onto the rest of the day.
The Colonials responded for two more runs in their half of the fourth, with RBIs by Terrazas and junior Tori Sensi, cutting the lead to 7-4, but they would not get any closer. Fordham scored six more runs to get to the final score, 13-4.
Gabriel got the loss but did not allow an earned run on the day. The native of Fullerton, CA struck out four in five innings. Junior Carrie Higdon pitched the final two innings for GW.
