Softball Loses Two to James Madison

WASHINGTON, DC - With the exception of senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis, the George Washington bats were unable to solve the James Madison duo of Meredith Felts and Jenny Clohan, as the Dukes swept the Colonials in a non-conference doubleheader at Mount Vernon Softball Complex Wednesday afternoon. JMU took the opener, 8-0 in six innings, and 6-0 in the second game.
Halkiotis went a perfect 3-3 in the opener. The Brookeville, MD native, who is among the national leaders in doubles, added a pair of two-base knocks in game one, and also went 1-3 in the nightcap.
Seniors Jackie Yaniga and Katie Miller, as well as freshman Katie Terrazas, were the only Colonials to record a base-hit on the day.
Sophomore pitcher Amanda Gabriel (6-11) took the loss in game one, allowing just three earned runs on ten hits in five innings of work. The right-handed hurler fanned five batters and did not allow a walk on the day. Miller pitched the final inning, allowing three runs, all unearned.
Junior Carrie Higdon (0-3) pitched her first career complete game in the nightcap, allowing six earned runs on nine hits, while striking out four and allowing a walk.
Defensively, GW committed five errors in game one, but did not make one in the nightcap.
The Colonials (7-18, 3-5 A-10) are back in action Saturday, April 12, when they host Dayton in a pivotal Atlantic 10 conference doubleheader at 12:00 pm. The GW softball team is promoting Saturday's twinbill in collaboration with the women's tennis team as `Aces and Bases.' All fans 8-18 years of age will be eligible to participate in a free softball and/or tennis clinic the following day at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
