PHILADELPHIA, PA - No. 13/12 George Washington battles defending Atlantic 10 champion Xavier in the semifinals of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship Sunday in a game televised on CSTV at 2:30 pm. The Colonials seek to make their 11th tournament final and third title game appearance in the last four seasons.
No. 2-seed GW (25-5) cruised past 10th-seeded Rhode Island, 70-43, in the quarterfinal round Saturday behind six players who scored at least eight points. Junior Jessica Adair led four double-digit scorers with 12 points as the Colonials turned the tide with a 25-5 first-half-ending run.
The Colonials are 10-5 all-time in the semifinals of the A-10 Championship, but were bounced out of the league semis at the hands of Saint Joseph's last season. GW advanced to the finals the two years prior, losing to Temple in the title game in 2005 and 2006.
No. 3-seed Xavier (22-8) defeated sixth-seeded Saint Joseph's, 74-52, to make its ninth semfinal appearance in the last 11 seasons. First team All-Atlantic 10 pick Amber Harris had 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists to lead the Musketeers.
GW owns a 17-11 edge in the all-time series with Xavier and has won the last two meetings. The Colonials won 56-46 over the Musketeers in the lone meeting this season.
