Gymnastics Hosts First Annual Pink Meet Sunday

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington gymnastics team hosts its inaugural PINK MEET Sunday, March 9, as the Colonials host East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rivals Maryland and West Virginia, as well as #24 Kent State at 3:00 pm. Fans are encouraged to join all competitors, coaches and staff in wearing pink to this special event. Proceeds from the competition will go to support the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (NBCC).

The Colonials are 1-2 against these same teams this season, with their victory coming at Maryland Friday, February 15. GW was third in a four-team meet at West Virginia, falling to the then #7 Oklahoma Sooners and West Virginia, while defeating William & Mary. Kent State defeated the Colonials at the Golden Flashes' MAC Center despite a then season-high GW score of 193.125.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE COLONIALS
George Washington finished second in a quad meet at #20 Penn State Saturday with a 192.575. Freshman Leslie Delima scored career highs on floor exercise and balance beam en route to a career best 38.625 in the all-around, placing her third overall. Junior Kristen Simpson recorded the best individual performance for a Colonial with a 9.850 vault, tying her for second. Sophomore Christa Devine led the team on bars with a 9.650. The meet with the Nittany Lions was a memorable one for 23-year Head Coach Margie Foster-Cunningham, as Foster-Cunningham was a five-time All-American at Penn State and led the Nittany Lions to a 1980 National Championship.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE MOUNTAINEERS
WVU topped Pitt 194.025-191.975 in Pittsburgh on March 1. The Mountaineers (11-7, 5-0) picked up their fifth-straight conference win to stay unbeaten versus EAGL opponents. Junior Mehgan Morris scored 39.100 points in the all-around. Morris was the all-around champion after posting her fourth score above 39 points in her last five meets, while Erica Watson placed second with a total of 38.950 points on all four events. Jaime Gold won vault with a 9.875 while Amy Bieski tied for first on floor with a 9.850.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE TERRAPINS
The University of Maryland gymnastics team placed third Saturday at the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. Despite top all-arounders sophomore Brandi George and freshman Abigail Adams not competing due to illness, the Terrapins earned their season-high score of 193.250. In the final rotation, the Terps hit six-for-six beam routines for the first time this season. Sophomore Talia Tossone won the event with a 9.850.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE GOLDEN FLASHES
The 24th-ranked Kent State Golden Flashes held a huge lead after the first rotation and never let up in a 194.825-188.475 win over Bowling Green at The M.A.C. Center. Leading the Golden Flashes was senior Kristin Peters, who won on both bars and beam. She received a score of 9.875 to win bars and tied for first with a mark of 9.750 on beam. Junior Rachel Stuck won on floor with a career-high score of 9.900. The Golden Flashes put an exclamation point on a big win with a season-high team score of 49.175 on floor.

UP NEXT FOR GW:
The Colonials face the two best teams in the EAGL, the defending conference champions #17 North Carolina State and North Carolina, as well as #5 LSU at the Wolfpack's Reynolds Coliseum, Friday, March 14 at 7:00 pm. This will be the second time this season GW has traveled to Raleigh. On Feb. 3, the Colonials finished third in a quad meet at NC State, falling to then #16 Auburn and the Wolfpack, while defeating Texas Woman's University. GW and LSU have only met head-to-head three times with the Tigers taking all three meetings. Ironically, the last time the teams met was exactly 15 years prior to the meet on March 14.

The National Breast Cancer Coalition is a grassroots membership organization dedicated to ending breast cancer through the power of action and advocacy.
