WASHINGTON, DC - Despite four hits and a grand slam home run by Senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis, the Georgetown Hoyas took the nightcap of a doubleheader, 11-10 over George Washinton to complete the sweep. Halkiotis became just the third Colonial to record four base hits in a single game.
The Colonials got on the board early with an early run in the first of Hoyas hurler Melissa Conners. Halkiotis led off the game with a walk but was forced out second as freshman Katie Terrazas reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop. Senior Jackie Yaniga then ripped a two-out double to right center to score Terrazas all the way from first. Junior Tori Sensi was then hit by a pitch and both her and Terrazas stole a base to put two runners in scoring position but were not able to score.
Senior Katie Miller started in the circle for the Colonials for the first time since Feb. 8, and made her first appearance in the battery since Feb. 9. The Hoyas were able to respond from its one-run deficit with four runs on three extra base hits.
Down 4-1 in the top of the second, GW quickly cut the lead to one with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Miller was plunked to lead off the inning and advanced a base on a single by sophomore Amanda Holst. Sophomore Amanda Gabriel was then robbed of a base hit on a leaping catch by the third baseman, keeping the runners at first and second. That was short lived as Halkiotis drove in Holst with a RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to 4-2. Junior Carrie Higdon then drove in another run with another single up the middle to cut the lead to one at 4-3. Halkiotis and Higdon later succeeded on a double steal to put both runners in scoring position with just one out, but the Colonials were unable to bring them in.
Despite being hit by a pitch in the left arm to lead off the second, Miller remained in the circle for GW and got three groundball outs to keep the score at 4-3, Hoyas.
After scoring a run and connecting on three hits by Sensi, Holst and Gabriel in the top of the third, the Colonials tied the game at four, which signaled the end for Conners. In came Jennifer Connell, the game one starter, who was then tagged by a RBI single by Halkiotis as GW took the lead at 5-4.
After giving up three runs on a pair of home runs in the bottom of the fourth, Miller was relieved by freshman Ali Pardo who last pitched March 13 against La Salle. Down 7-5, Pardo struck out the first batter she faced and got out of the inning unscathed. The rookie also pitched a scoreless fifth inning.
The Colonials cut the lead to one in the sixth at 7-6, as Halkiotis doubled down the left field line and scored as Terrazas reached on an error by the shortstop.
Georgetown came right back in the sixth with three runs, including a double by McKinley Cooper. Cooper was thrown at third as Holst threw a perfect relay after she ran through the wall in left. Going into the top of the seventh, the Hoyas took a 10-6 lead.
Attempting to stage a comeback in the seventh, Sensi led off the inning with a single. With one out Miller also singled to put runners on first and second. Gabriel then drew a walk to load the bases with two outs for Halkiotis. The Brookeville, MD then smoked a line drive over the center field wall for a grand slam to tie the game at 10. The blast was Halkiotis' second home run of the season, both in the Grand Slam variety.
Now tied at 10, the Colonials brought Gabriel from the outfield to circle who gave up back-to-back doubles as Georgetown took the nightcap 11-10.
