Golf Takes Second at GW Invitational

BETHANY BEACH, DE -- George Washington's Lewis Sturdy was the low Colonial with a three-round 181 at the 10th annual George Washington Invitational men's golf tournament on the Delaware Shore. The two-day, 45-hole event was played Friday and Saturday on the par 72, 6,834-yard Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club. The Colonials finished second in the 20-team field while the GW `B' Team, on which Sturdy played, placed sixth. The tournament, originally scheduled as a 54-hole event, was shortened to 45 holes due to darkness.
Maryland won the tournament with a 738 (306-293-139) while the Colonials were 10 strokes off the pace with a 748 (301-297-150). Maryland's Chris Gould won the individual title with a total 180 (72-72-34) to edge Sturdy, Skidmore's Chrs DeJohn and Terrapin teammate Donnie Shin by one stroke.
GW senior Tim Johnson was the next-lowest Colonial after firing a 182 (74-72-36), which put him alone in fifth place.
Penn and Navy tied for third place, each carding 749s while Bucknell was fifth with a 758, two strokes ahead of GW's `B' Team at 760.
Next up for the Colonials is the adidas Hoosier Invitational, hosted by Indiana University, on March 29-30, at Bloomington, IN. The 54-hole event takes place at the par-72, 6,813-yard Indiana University Golf Course.
