GW (22-5, 10-2 A-10) kept pace with A-10 co-leaders Xavier and Temple with a 61-53 victory at Saint Joseph's Sunday. The game, broadcast nationally on CSTV, featured eight ties and five lead changes, the last coming on a tide-turning 9-0 GW run midway through the second half. Jessica Adair was named CSTV's Sirius Player of the Game after scoring a game-high 20 points to help the Colonials avenge their 2007 A-10 semifinal loss to the Hawks.
In the last meeting, four Colonials reached double figures, led by junior Jessica Adair's 27 points and senior Kimberly Beck's 18 points and eight assists, as No. 14/13 GW rolled past Richmond, 78-51, in front of 2,807 Think Pink clad fans at Smith Center on Feb. 10. The Colonials led by 23 at halftime and limited the Spiders to just 28.3 percent shooting to win their 11th straight game at home. GW is 26-1 at home the past two seasons.
GW is currently in a three-way tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 with Temple and Xavier with a 10-2 league record. If the three-way tie remains at the conclusion of the regular season, seeding will be determined by comparing the Top 3 teams' records against the next highest common opponent in the standings. If the three-way tie is broken and only two teams remain tied, GW holds the tiebreak over Xavier, while Temple holds the tiebreak over GW and Xavier holds the tiebreak over Temple. GW has won at least a share of six straight conference regular-season crowns, including West Division titles each year from 2002-05, and has been the league's No. 1 seed for the conference tournament a record 11 times.
GW's senior quartet of Whitney Allen, Kimberly Beck, Sarah-Jo Lawrence and Lora Mitchell will play their final home game against Fordham this Saturday, March 1. The group has guided the Colonials to a 96-27 overall record and four NCAA Tournament appearances the past four seasons and has combined for more than 3,400 points, 1,400 rebounds, 1,100 assists and 600 steals during their careers.
Richmond (13-14, 6-6 A-10) remains in contention for a first-round bye for the upcoming A-10 Championship, trailing fourth place Dayton and Charlotte by one game with a 6-6 league record. The Spiders upset the Flyers on the road last Wednesday, but fell to Duquesne at Robins Center Saturday to fall into a three-way tie for sixth in the league with St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's. UR led by five at halftime, but Duquesne made 17-of-30 shots and scored 50 points in the second half for a come-from-behind 76-67 victory.
Freshman Brittani Shells scored a game-high 19 points against the Dukes to increase her team-best scoring average to 14.0 ppg. Redshirt junior Johanna McKnight was named A-10 Co-Player of the Week Monday after going for 21.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in the Spiders' 1-1 week. McKnight scored a career-high 27 points and hit the game-winning layup against Dayton.
