WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington gymnastics team hit on 23 of 24 routines on the day en route to a season high 193.850 points in its victory over Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon at GW's Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. Junior Kristen Simpson tied the program's all-time record on vault with a 9.950, tying the mark originally set by Erin Aiken in 2004. A Colonials gymnast captured an individual title on each apparatus.
The total score of 193.850 is GW's best in almost two years. On March 1, 2006, the Colonials defeated Towson at home with a 194.400. That date was also the last time GW scored over 194 points.
GW opened the meet on vault and took the early lead with a 48.400 total. Senior Carolyn Marckesano led off with a career-high 9.800, smashing her previous record of 9.750, which she set back at the 2006 EAGL Championships. Junior Erin Quigg just after with a 9.700 in the two-spot in the lineup. After a pair of 9.450's by freshman Leslie Delima and sophomore Christa Devine, Simpson recorded her record-tying performance. Sophomore Lindsay Tom performed on vault for the first time as a collegian in the final spot, recording a 9.500. At the end of the first rotation, GW held an enormous 1.325 lead as Pittsburgh struggled on bars.
The bars, unfortunately for the Panthers, gave the Colonials no problem as GW recorded a season-high 48.675. Senior Gillian Coleman led off with a 9.700, matching her season-high for the third time this season. Delima followed up with a 9.650 as the remaining four Colonials put together a string of four consecutive routines of at least 9.725. Senior McKenzie Parrack was third in the rotation for GW and recorded a 9.725. Sophomore Megan Quinn followed up with a season-high of her own with a 9.750. Junior Bree Plotsker then recorded her second consecutive 9.725, matching her season-high. Devine finished up the rotation with a 9.775. After rotation two, the Colonials extended their lead to 1.9 as GW racked up 97.075 points after two events.
The balance beam, which saw the Colonials averaging just 47.610 after five meets, was a hot one for GW as all six gymnasts hit their routines en route to a season-best 48.325. Lindsay Tom led off the rotation with a 9.450, while the final five gymnasts recorded at least a 9.575. Simpson made her first appearance of the season on beam and recorded a 9.700. Delima and Plotsker both followed with a 9.575. Meg Quinn followed up with a season-best 9.675 before Devine recorded a career-high 9.800 to finish off the rotation. Pittsburgh struggled on floor as well in their third rotation as GW opened up a 4.025 lead with 145.400 total points through three events.
The Colonials recorded a 48.450 on floor to finish the meet with their season-best total score. Parrack, Delima and Quinn all recorded a 9.750 in their respective positions to lead the team and win the event crown. Plotsker was third in the lineup and posted a 9.650, while Marckesano rounded out the event with a 9.550.
