Women's Basketball Hosts Coppin State Monday Night

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's basketball team looks to start 2-0 for the third consecutive season when it hosts Coppin State at Charles E. Smith Center Monday at 7:30 pm.

GW (1-0) won its 14th consecutive home game with a 75-56 victory over UMBC in first-year head coach Mike Bozeman's debut Saturday afternoon. The Colonials fell behind by 15 points just over eight minutes into the game, but closed the first half on a 27-9 run and trailed only briefly in the second half to post their third straight season-opening victory over the Retrievers.
Senior Antelia Parrish narrowly missed just the third triple-double in school history with 19 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Senior Jessica Adair added 15 points and nine boards and rookies Tara Booker and Tiana Myers combined for 24 points and 11 rebounds to offset Carlee Cassidy's career-high 31-point outburst.
The Colonials have won both previous meetings against the Eagles by an average of 37.5 points. GW hosted CSU in its second game of the 2006-07 season, building a double-digit advantage early in the second half en route to a 63-53 victory.
Defending MEAC champion Coppin State opens its season Monday night after posting a 22-12 overall record and qualifying for its third NCAA Tournament in four seasons in 2007-08. The Eagles graduated a pair of first team All-MEAC performers in guards Rashida Suber and Shalamar Oakley, who combined for more than 35 points per game and better than half their team's offense last year. CSU will rely on preseason All-MEAC selections Whitney Cunningham and Danielle Anders in the frontcourt.
