Swimming Opens Season With Second-Place Showing at Potomac Relays

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW men's and women's swimming teams combined to place second, of five teams, at the Potomac Relays Friday at American University's Reeves Aquatic Center. GW's men placed second with 308 points while the women were fourth with 292 points. The event, which consists solely of relay events, is held annually at AU. The diving events, scheduled to take place at Georgetown University's Yates Field House, were cancelled due to the outbreak of the norovirus at the university. George Mason won the overall title with 660 points, 60 points ahead the Colonials.
One of the highlights for the GW women was the 200 medley relay which they won in a time of 1:50.49, 2.2 seconds ahead second-place American. The victorious Colonials were Isabel Tawney, Ariana Berdini, Jessica Miga and anchor Paola Leor.
The GW men won two events, the 3x100 butterfly relay and the 3x100 breaststroke relay. The Colonials winning the butterfly relay were Davin Harding, Andrew Maguire and anchor Cascade Tuholske. The victorious Colonials in the breaststroke were Dan Krizan, Tom Pullen and Maguire.
"It was a good `first meet' - a good starting place," GW head coach Dan Rhinehart said. "We had some good performances that we can build on and we learned a few things about our freshmen, and our freshmen learned a few things about college swimming. It was a `win-win' despite the final scores."
"We still have a long way to go. The A-10 Championships are in February and we all know we have a lot of work to do between now and then," Rhinehart added. "I was particularly pleased with the performances of Cascade Tuholske. Cascade was out all last season due to an injury, so to see him comeback and swim this good at the a meet this early in the season -- shows a lot of promise."
Rhinehart also was especially pleased with the swims of senior Jessica Miga. "Jessica also turned in some good swims -- she was at or near her season best times from last year. She's getting her senior year off to a great start."
GW next swims Friday, Oct. 17, at Catholic University in a three-way meet with American beginning at 5:00 p.m. The three teams race again the next day at AU beginning at 9:00 a.m.
