WASHINGTON, DC - Saint Louis' Kelly Waeckerle scored goals in the 72nd and 76th minutes to break a scoreless tie and defeat George Washington, 2-0, in Atlantic 10 Conference women's soccer action at Mount Vernon Field Friday afternoon.
After playing scoreless for more than 71 minutes, Billikens' forward Waeckerle broke the deadlock with an individual effort that saw her beat a defender in the corner, race into the box and loft a curling, left-footed shot over the outstretched arms of Colonials' freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe for the deciding tally.
Waeckerle struck again less than four minutes later, taking a through-ball from Ashley Brazill and sliding a shot past a charging Rowe.
GW (7-8-0, 3-4-0 A-10) attempted to rally after the goals, taking four of their eight total shots in the final nine minutes, but couldn't get past SLU goalkeeper Hannah Perry, who posted three saves for her Atlantic 10 leading seventh shutout of the season.
Senior forward Keara Mehlert almost got the Colonials on the board in the 82nd minute with a half-volley from 25-yards out, but Perry was able to collect her mishandle before the ball crossed the goal line. Junior Brittany Eger nearly finished senior Meg Pyle's left-to-right cross with less than three minutes left, but Perry was once again able to make a sprawling stop.
SLU (7-3-4, 3-2-1 A-10) held a 12-8 edge in shots and 5-3 advantage in corners. Rowe made three saves.
GW will `Kick for the Cure' to support the GW Cancer Institute against A-10 leader Charlotte Sunday at 12:00 pm. GW soccer is asking fans to wear pink to raise awareness for breast cancer research.
The Colonials will also celebrate Senior Day as Mehlert, Pyle, Stephanie Covello, Lauren Kelly, Christy Mazzola, Kerry Philbin and Erica Wright play their final matches at Mount Vernon Field.
