These two teams met twice last season, with the Colonials winning 70-57 at UD Arena in January and 61-45 in an A-10 Tournament quarterfinal in Cincinnati in early March.
The Colonials won their eighth straight home game overall and 11th consecutive league home game with a 76-54 victory against Charlotte on Saturday. Five players scored in double-figures for the third time this season and senior backcourt duo Kimberly Beck (19p/11a) and Sarah-Jo Lawrence (13p/10r) each notched double-doubles to help GW move into a share of first place in the A-10.
GW is now 10-1 at home this season, marking the 18th consecutive season of 10-or-more home victories. The Colonials are allowing a league-low 49.0 points through five conference games this season.
GW head coach Joe McKeown is quickly approaching his 500th career victory. McKeown currently has 498 career wins, two shy of the milestone and in 34th place on the all-time career coaching victories list.
Senior Whitney Allen is also approaching a milestone - the forward is nine rebounds shy of becoming just the ninth player in program history to score 600 career points and grab 600 rebounds. The others include Gloria Murphy '88, Darlene Saar '95, Tajama Abraham '97, Kas Allen '88, Ugo Oha '04, Tracey Earley '89, Anna Montanana '05 and Trish Egan '82.
GW women's basketball is having a banner season in terms of attendance, averaging 1,928 fans through 11 home games this season, which would top the program's single-season home attendance average of 1,637 set during the 1995-96 season. The 21,208 fans to watch the Colonials this season marks the third highest single-season home total in program history - just 4,136 shy of the school record with four home games remaining.
Dayton rebounded from back-to-back conference losses and having its 16-game winning streak snapped with a slim 56-54 victory at Saint Joseph's on Saturday. Senior Nikki Oakland, who paces the Flyers in scoring at 13.7 ppg, was the lone UD player in double figures versus the Hawks with 16 points and led all players with eight rebounds. The Flyers overcame a 41-26 rebounding deficit with some hot first half shooting (51.7 percent) for a 36-30 halftime lead, then held on late.
At 17-4, Dayton has already matched its most victories (2005-06 - 17-12) in a season since moving to Division I prior to the 1984-85 season. UD has posted just two winning conference seasons since joining the A-10 for the 1995-96 season - identical 9-7 marks in both 1999-00 and 2000-01.
