Gymnastics To Battle Top Competition at West Virginia

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington gymnastics team will travel the 208 miles to Morgantown, WV to take on their East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival Mountaineers, the seventh-ranked Oklahoma Sooners and William & Mary Sunday, Jan. 27 at 1:00 pm. The meet will take place at the 14,000 seat WVU Coliseum.

GW is coming off a second place showing at its season opening Lindsey Ferris Invitational last Sunday at Smith Center. The team racked up 190.000 points with a high of 48.375 on vault. Freshman Leslie Delima showed the way for the Colonials in her collegiate debut, finishing second in all-around with 38.475 points. Sophomore Christa Devine averaged a 9.675 in her three events, including a 9.750 on vault, matching her career high. Junior Kristen Simpson recorded the highest total for a Colonial on the day with a 9.825 on vault, good for second place overall. Senior Gillian Coleman performed in all-around as well for the first time in her collegiate career, taking fifth place (38.050). This was the second straight year that GW opened the season with a second place finish to UNC at the Lindsey Ferris Invite with a 190.000 total.
The West Virginia Mountaineers defeated EAGL rival Maryland Friday night as the team recorded 193.050 points, topping the previous season-best mark of 192.125 when they fell to Oklahoma at the Cancun Classic on Jan. 4. Freshman Amy Bieski scored a 38.475 in the all-around, winning the vault (9.800) and floor exercise (9.825) and was named EAGL Rookie of the Week. Sophomore Shelly Purkat was named EAGL Specialist of the Week, recording season-highs on beam (9.750) and floor (9.800). Junior Mehgan Morris finished second in the all-around (38.800) while sophomore Kiersten Spoerke also won the balance beam (9.800) for WVU.
Oklahoma jumped from ninth to seventh in the GymInfo poll Monday after defeating Texas Woman's University 196.450-192.800 Saturday. Senior All-American Kiara Redmond-Sturms won the all-around title with a career high 39.650 as the Sooners posted season high's on bars (49.200) and floor (49.275). Redmond-Sturms won the vault (9.900), bars (9.925) and floor (9.950), while taking third on beam (9.875). Teammates Haley DeProspero (9.925) and Holly Vise (9.900) finished first and second on the event. DeProspero took third in the all-around (38.600) while another Sooner, Ashley Jackson took second (38.875). The Sooners ranked sixth in the nation on bars and fifth on beam and floor. DeProspero ranks third nationally on beam (9.892) while Redmond-Sturms owns the highest national average on floor (9.933).
William & Mary finished sixth at the GW's Lindsey Ferris Invitational to open their 2008 season. Senior Stevie Waldman leads the Tribe and earned a win with 9.775 performance on bars at GW Sunday. Waldman placed sixth in the all-around (37.800) as the team accumulated 182.725 points in their four rotations. Waldman was also the team's top finisher on beam, recording a solid 9.525 to place 10th, and the senior also matched fellow senior Tricia Long with the team's highest score on vault (9.575), as the pair earned a tie for the 12th place in the event.
