Gymnastics Takes Second At GW/Lindsey Ferris Invitational

WASHINGTON, DC - Freshman Leslie Delima finished second in the all-around to lead the Colonials to a second place finish in their annual GW/Lindsey Ferris Invitational to open its 2008 gymnastics season. The University of North Carolina won the Invite for the second straight season with 193.575 points, followed by the Colonials with 190.000 and Rutgers with 187.625. Cornell finished fourth with 185.975 followed by Temple (184.900) and William & Mary (182.725). GW finished second behind UNC in each event and scored 190.000 in their season opening Invite for the second straight season.
In her collegiate debut, Delima participated in all four events to score 38.475 total points. Senior Gillian Coleman also performed in the all-around for the first time in her career at GW, taking fifth with 38.050 points.
The Colonials placed second as a team on vault with 48.375 points, just .125 behind the Tar Heels. Junior Kristen Simpson recorded the best showing for a Colonial on the day in her specialty event, taking second with 9.825. Sophomore Christa Devine also set a new personal record on the vault with a 9.750.
GW also took second on the bars (47.975) as four gymnasts recorded at least a 9.600. Coleman showed the way for the Colonials with a 9.700. Delima and Devine followed up with a 9.675 while sophomore Megan Quinn earned a 9.600.
Delima and Devine tied for fifth on beam to lead the Colonials on the apparatus. The duo both earned a 9.600 score as GW scored 47.475 on the event.
Delima also led the team on floor exercise along with Quinn as the pair both recorded a 9.600. The Colonials struggled on the event to earn a 46.175 as a team.

GW will be in action next Sunday, Jan. 27, as they travel 208 miles to Morgantown, WV to take on their East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival Mountaineers, the ninth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners and the Tribe from the College of William & Mary. The meet will begin at 1:00 pm.
