FAIRFAX, VA - In the final game of the 2007 George Mason Tournament, host-school George Mason (3-1-0) scored in the 51st minute to secure a 1-0 victory over George Washington (3-2-0) early Sunday afternoon on the campus of George Mason.
After starting the season 3-0 for the first time in school history, the Colonials have lost their past two matches. On Friday, in the opening game of the four-team tournament, GW was dominated by Georgetown, 5-0, as the Colonials did not record a single shot.
On Sunday, GW played stronger, registering eight shots, two on goal, but were unable to break onto the scoreboard. The match was a scoreless tie until early in the second half, when Mason's Annie Lebherz was left unmarked on the left wing, allowing her an open shot that she drilled into the back of the net, her second goal of the season. Rachel Wiggins was credited with the assist.
The Patriots finished 2-0 in the tournament, but lost out on first place to Georgetown in a tiebreaker. The Hoyas defeated the Seawolves of Stony Brook in the first game on Sundya by a final of 2-0, which gave them a +7 goal differential.
The lone GW representative named to the all-tournament team, voted on by the coaches, was red-shirt junior goalkeeper Amie Kern (Saylorsburg, PA/Stroudsburg). Kern allowed five goals and recorded 10 saves in the two matches. Joining her on the all-tournament team was Georgetown's Sarah Fetters, Stephanie Zare, Ingrid Wells and Michaela Buonomo; George Mason's Kasey Davenport, Hannah Sklar, Lebherz and Patti Benner; and Stony Brook's Jackie Timmes and Sarah Dwyer.
George Washington will take almost a full two weeks off before hosting Buffalo on Sept. 21, at 4:00 p.m.
