WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington University Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz announced today that the University has extended the contract of women's basketball head coach Joe McKeown through June 30, 2014. Terms of the contract have not been disclosed.
McKeown recently completed his 18th season at GW where he has a record of 414-147 (.738) including a 28-4 (.719) mark last season. Overall, McKeown has a 482-167 (.743) record that includes three years as head coach at New Mexico State.
The dean of Atlantic 10 Conference women's basketball coaches, McKeown has won more games than any other women's basketball coach in the history of the Atlantic 10.
He is the winningest coach in GW women's hoops history and all 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and 16 20-plus win campaigns have come under McKeown. The Colonials were ranked No. 11 in the final USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll and No. 14 in the final AP Poll at the end of last season. He was named the A-10 Coach of the Year for the fifth time in 2007.
"We are very happy that Coach McKeown has signed a contract extension here at George Washington," said Kvancz. "He is one of the most respected and accomplished women's basketball coaches in the game."
GW (28-4, 14-0 A-10) was the regular-season champion and earned an at-large bid to the 2007 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. The Colonials won their first-round and second-round games game against Boise State and Texas A&M before falling to North Carolina in the regional semifinal round at Dallas, TX.
