Men's Soccer Dominates VMI, 7-0, in Exhibition Match

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's soccer team got a hat trick from senior Abimbola Pedro and rolled in its first collegiate competition of 2007, knocking off VMI 7-0 in an exhibition match at Mount Vernon Field on Monday afternoon.
Following a week of training in England, the Colonials controlled much of the action in their lone exhibition tune-up stateside. GW opens regular-season play against American at the DC College Cup, hosted by George Mason, this Friday at 5:00 pm.
GW outshot the Keydets, 20-2, and led 4-0 at halftime. Junior forward Mike Rollings opened the scoring in the 15th minute, chipping a Greg McKay pass past VMI goalkeeper Steve Phillips. Senior Thomas Stuber was the beneficiary of another McKay assist less than three minutes later. McKay tackled the ball away in GW's offensive third and dished off to an open Stuber inside the box. Stuber tucked the ball to the lower left corner for the quick 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Luke Wildy, who returns to the Colonials lineup following a knee injury last fall, finished a centering pass from Rollings in the 23rd minute to put GW ahead 3-0. Pedro got on the scoreboard in the 30th minute, taking a dish from rookie Kory Trott and beating Phillips to the lower right corner.
Rollings capped his five-point day with an unassisted tally in the 58th minute. The 5-7 speedster raced past two defenders on the left wing and deposited a shot to the lower right corner. Play remained in the middle of the pitch until Pedro broke through for a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes. In the 83rd, Pedro calmly netted a through ball from sophomore Mike Briscoe, then finished a similar pass from freshman Steve Wujek four minutes later to produce the final seven-goal margin.
GW goalkeepers Greg Yahr and Matt Scheer split time in net and were not forced to make a save. Phillips turned away one shot in the first half for VMI, while Greg Hersh made three second-half stops.
