CAMDEN, NJ - The George Washington Women's Rowing Team placed two boats in the Petite Finals at the Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges Championship (Eastern Sprints), held Sunday on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ. GW compiled 14 points for a 16th place team finish among a very fast and deep field. GW competed in the varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight events. Team point totals also included the second varsity eight in which GW did not have an entry.
The varsity eight crew of Mansi Shah, Angela Wunderli, Bess Austin, Angela Costales, Liz Gordon, Kate Austin, Laura Crotty, Jenna Feistritzer and Hilary Goldberg finished 6th in their morning heat, placing them in the third level final. In the third level final, racing against Boston College, Cornell, Rutgers, Georgetown and MIT, GW placed 4th with a time of 6:58.6. "This group has worked hard all year and they raced that way today," said head coach Rob McCracken. "While we all would have liked the results to have been better, they had a good race and simply got beat by faster crews."
GW's varsity four crew of Gina Fernandes, Brandi Kerrigan, Ashley Larrimore, Emily Geise and Bonnie Scott placed 12th overall and were able to close the time differential from earlier races this season against Rhode Island, Navy and Boston University. "The four has really come together over the past few weeks," said McCracken. "The focus and determination they brought to practice paid off in their race today. I am really happy with the improvement they showed over the course of the season."
The Colonials novice eight entered Eastern Sprints seeded 16 out of 16 teams, but finished the day in 12th place. Coxed by Katie Martin, the novice eight consisted of freshman walk-ons Ellen VanCleave, Stephanie DeFlora, Carrie Rollman, Victoria Koke, Rhonda Crittle, Allison Miedema, Kate Williamson and Sasha Frankel. The crew put together a complete race in the trials and raced Northeastern seat for seat down the course, but in the end were edged out by half a second. This advanced them to the Petite Final, in which they finished 6th. "It was a good day of racing for all of the boats, even if the results were not that strong. We were able to complete the season on a good note and look forward to next year," said Assistant Coach Sarah Dondero. "The novices are looking forward to joining the upperclassmen on the varsity squad next year and helping GW get faster."
Eastern Sprints marked the final race for nine members of George Washington Women's Rowing. Congratulations to seniors Kate Austin, Angela Costales, Jenna Feistritzer, Hilary Goldberg, Liz Gordon, Brandi Kerrigan, Ashley Larrimore, Ashley McCawley and Mansi Shah.
