Johnson's 229 Leads Colonials at Firestone

AKRON, OH -- GW junior Tim Johnson (Marblehead, MA) fired a 13-over-par 229 putting him in a five-way tie for 46th place as the low Colonial at the 54-hole FirstEnergy Intercollegiate, Saturday and Sunday, at Akron, OH. The tournament was played at the famed Firestone Country Club which has hosted the PGA Championship in addition to several other professional golf tournaments.
GW combined to shoot a 932 (309-314-309) to place 17th in the 17-team tournament. Eastern Kentucky won the event with a three-round 868 (295-282-291), to edge host Akron by one stroke.
Stefan Wiedergruen of Charlotte, Graham Hill of Eastern Michigan and Ben Wood of Miami (OH) each completed three rounds on the par-72, 7,125-yard North Course at Firestone Country Club 1-under par with 215 strokes and went on to a playoff to determine the individual medalist. Wood eventually prevailed after outlasting the two competitors through four additional holes.
Colonials sophomore Lewis Sturdy (Keston, Kent, England) shot a 20-over-par 236 (76-85-75) to place 72nd, seven strokes behind Johnson among 96 individuals.
Next up for the Colonials is the 54-hole Atlantic 10 Golf Championship, May 4-6, at Orange County National Golf Club near Orlando, FL.
