WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University gymnastics team had 11 gymnasts earn East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) All-Academic honors, as announced by conference officials on Monday. The Colonials, who had 13 honorees last year in their second season in the conference, had four gymnasts receive the honor for the third straight year, all while in the EAGL.
For the Colonials, seniors Jess Guilbert (Roswell, GA) and Abbey Myles (Waxhaw, NC) as well as juniors Carolyn Marckesano (Reston, VA) and McKenzie Parrack (Richardson, TX) all earned the honor for the third straight year. Senior Maggie Parrack (Richardson, TX) and sophomores Erin Quigg (Chantilly, VA) and Kristen Simpson (Surfside, SC) received the honor for their second time. All four freshman, Christa Devine (Mt. Sinai, NY), Danielle Parretti (Milford, MA), Megan Quinn (Syracuse, NY), and Lindsay Tom (Congers, NY) received the honor in their first seasons at GW.
A total of 96 student-athletes from the eight East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) schools were named to the 2007 EAGL All-Academic team this season. Nintey-six honorees is the highest total in the 12-year history of the EAGL; there were 95 EAGL All-Academic team members in 2005.
In order to be named to the EAGL All-Academic team, student-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the two previous semesters. Freshmen are also eligible, if they earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester.
Maryland placed 15 members on the team, which is the highest total of student-athletes from one school. Rutgers and West Virginia tie for having the second highest total of honorees; they both placed 14 gymnasts on the team. North Carolina and NC State both have 12 honorees. Seventeen of the 96 gymnasts were honored for their fourth year.
GW returns to action when it travels to College Park, MD, on Friday, March 30, to compete in the EAGL Championships at 6:00 pm, in the Comcast Center. For ticket information please visit the official website of the EAGL conference at www.eaglgymnastics.net.
