WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's basketball team improved three spots to No. 8 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll released Monday afternoon, the program's second appearance in the national Top 10 and first since 1992.
GW (19-2, 8-0 A-10) defeated Richmond 72-53 in its lone game last week for its 12th win in a row, equaling the fourth longest win streak in school history and seventh longest in the nation. The ranking matches the Colonials' highest since February of the 1991-92 season, one in which GW peaked at No. 6, the program's best-ever ranking.
The Colonials joined the AP Top 25 on Nov. 20 and have remained for 12 consecutive weeks, the second longest streak in school history. GW's 1991-92 team was ranked for 17 straight weeks from Dec. 1, 1991 to March 15, 1992.
GW also vaulted three spots into a tie for ninth in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Top 25 released Tuesday. The No. 9 Coaches' billing is the program's highest since peaking at No. 7 midway through the 1991-92 season.
"It's great for our program to be mentioned among the nation's best 10 teams," said GW head coach Joe McKeown. "We're excited about the season we're having, but the most important thing is to remain focused and take each game as it comes."
Sophomore Jessica Adair (17 points) and juniors Sarah-Jo Lawrence (15) and Kimberly Beck (16) all reached double-figures to lead GW at Richmond last Saturday. The Colonials' 8-0 league mark is the program's best A-10 start in four seasons.
After winning four straight road games, GW returns to Smith Center this Thursday, Feb. 8, to host Duquesne at 7:00 pm. The Colonials have won 10 consecutive games at home, matching the 14th longest streak in the country. A triumph versus the Dukes would mark the program's and McKeown's 16th 20-win season and the earliest any GW women's basketball team has reached 20 victories.
