PHILADELPHIA, PA - Junior women's basketball player Kimberly Beck was chosen the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Player of the Week for the second straight week and third time this season, the league announced on Monday.
Beck led all GW players by shooting 62 percent from the floor, including 56 percent from three-point range, to average 12.0 points, 5.0 assists and 4.5 steals in lopsided victories over Duquesne (76-46) and St. Bonaventure (75-41) last week. Beck was 5-of-8 from the floor, 3-of-5 from deep, for 13 points, six assists, a season-high six steals and four boards against the Dukes on Thursday, then went 3-of-5 from the field, 2-of-4 from downtown, for 11 points, four assists and three steals versus the Bonnies on Sunday. Beck, who shared this week's honor with Saint Louis' Tyler McIlwraith, amassed 10 assists versus just one turnover in 54 minutes of play.
The junior point guard now has 200 career steals, which ties her for 12th place all-time in program annals. Through Sunday's games, Beck ranks fifth in the nation in three-point field goal percentage at 45.2 percent and 23rd in the country with 5.5 assists per game.
Beck's efforts didn't overshadow other solid performances in last week's victories. Junior Sarah-Jo Lawrence averaged a team-best 13.5 points and 4.0 steals, followed by senior Kenan Cole's 13.0 points, on 56 percent shooting, and 5.0 assists and sophomore Jessica Adair's 12.5 points and 6.5 boards.
The Colonials stayed No. 8 in Monday's Associated Press Top 25, moving within 34 points of No. 7 LSU. It's GW's 13th consecutive week in the AP poll, four shy of the program-record of 17 weeks set during the 1991-92 season. On Tuesday, GW gained sole possession of the No. 9 slot in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Top 25 Poll, breaking away from Oklahoma, which fell to No. 11.
GW is preparing for its final regular-season road games of the season. The Colonials will visit Charlotte (Thursday at 7:00 pm) and Saint Louis (Sunday at 2:00 pm EST) for the first times in school history.
