Duquesne Hands Women's Soccer Third Straight Loss

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's soccer fought hard in the second half of Friday's match against Duquesne, but in the end, their comeback efforts were thwarted. The Dukes notched two late goals to secure the win, 3-0, in an Atlantic 10 Conference match held at Mount Vernon Field.
The loss dropped the Colonials to 5-5-0 overall on the year, and winless in A-10 play. Dating back to last season, GW has dropped their past six conference matches. Duquesne improved to 5-4-0, 2-1-0.
The visiting Dukes controlled play in the first half, out-shooting the Colonials, 9-2. Unfortunately for the host team, one of those shots managed to find the back of net. In the 30th minute, Faye Rasmussen gathered a loose ball at the top of the box and found herself one-on-one with the keeper. She wasted no time, and neatly tucked the ball into the left corner, just past the outstretched arms of GW keeper Amie Kern (Saylorsburg, PA/Stroudsburg).
The score remained 1-0 for much of the match, with GW beginning to attack more in the second half. The fever pitch with which the Colonials were playing quickly resulted in scoring opportunities, including a blast off the foot of senior Nicole Trickett (Eugene, OR/South Eugene) that sailed just over the crossbar. However, despite their best efforts, they were unable to net a goal.
Duquesne added two late goals, giving them the 3-0 win. Audra Mathews finished off a Shannon Rengers touch in the 84th minute for her third goal of the season. Later, in the 86th minute, Samantha Kaiser stole the ball from Kern to add the third and final goal.
George Washington will aim to snap their season-long three-match losing streak on Sunday, when they host St. Bonaventure at 1:00 p.m.
