Gymnastics Releases 2008 Season Schedule

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University head gymnastics coach Margie Foster-Cunningham announced the release of the 2008 season schedule. The Colonials will compete in 12 meets this season (four at home), including the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships March 29 at West Virginia. The slate also includes competition against two NCAA qualifiers: Oklahoma and LSU, and eight other regional qualifiers, including Foster-Cunningham's alma mater, Penn State.
GW will open its season at home for the third straight year at its annual GW Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 4:00 pm as Foster-Cunningham will look to earn her 400th career victory. The longest tenured coach at GW enters the 2008 season with 397 career victories in 22 years, all at GW. The field includes two EAGL opponents, North Carolina and Rutgers, both of which qualified for Regional competition in 2007. Also scheduled to compete are Cornell, Temple and William & Mary.
The Colonials will then travel to West Virginia (Jan. 27), North Carolina State (Feb. 3), Kent State (Feb. 8), and Maryland (Feb. 15) before hosting EAGL rival Pittsburgh Sunday, February 24, at 1:00 pm.
On Saturday, March 1, Foster-Cunningham will take the Colonials to her alma mater of Penn State, where she was a five-time All-America, led the Nittany Lions to a 1980 NCAA championship, and was a finalist for the Broderick Award, given to the most outstanding collegiate gymnast.
West Virginia, Maryland and Kent State will all make the trip to the District Sunday, March 9, prior to the Colonials' second trip to Raleigh Friday, March 14, where GW will meet the host Wolfpack, North Carolina and the LSU Tigers in a 7:00 pm showdown.
Seniors Gillian Coleman, Carolyn Marckesano, and McKenzie Parrack will make their final appearances at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center on Tuesday, March 18, as the Colonials go head-to-head against Towson. GW will return the favor, visiting Towson three days later in a final tuneup before the EAGL Championships where the Colonials finished a program-best fifth last season.
The Colonials return 10 letterwinnerers from last year's team, including Parrack and sophomore Christa Devine. After being selected team MVP as a junior, Parrack was named second-team All-Conference on both the bars and vault. Devine was named second-team All-Conference as a freshman on the bars, and took in the event at EAGL's with a season-high 9.850.
