WASHINGTON, DC -- The sixth annual Rehoboth Beach Fall Invitational, hosted by The George Washington University, will be held on Monday, September 25, at Kings Creek C.C. in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Kings Creek has hosted the 1996 ECAC Championship, the 2000 Delaware State Open, and the 2001 Williamson Cup on the par-71, 6,500-yard course. The event will be contested over 36 holes, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
Drexel is the defending champions of the event after defeating GW by four strokes last year. GW won the event in back-to-back years (2003 and `04). Navy won the Spring, 2003 event at Kings Creek and was second in the 2003 Fall event, so the Midshipmen know the course well and have had success there. Navy went to the NCAA in 2001, 2002, and 2003 as Patriot League Champs. Binghamton won the 2002 tournament. The 2001 event was rained out and the 2000 event was won by Iona College with GW placing second ahead of the University of Maryland in third. This year's field includes three-time MAAC Champions, Iona College, which has three NCAA Tournament appearances.
GW and Army both played in the 2006 NCAA East Regional as at-large selections and Goldey Beacom won the Division II Northeast Regional by 24 shots and finished in the Top 20 at the NCAA Division II finals.
Individually, the top returning finishers are GW's Bob Rohr who finished fifth there last year with a 71-76 and was sixth in 2004. GW senior Raman Luthra was ninth (77-71) and Tim Johnson placed 11th with a 76-73. Navy had three players in the Top 11, David Miller (7th at 147), Jeremy Garner (9th at 148) and Josh Benson (11th at 149) who are expected to compete for the Midshipmen.
Historically, Navy's Billy Hurley, who played on the U.S. Walker Cup team in 2005, played in the event twice finishing second in 2003 and seventh in 2002. The tournament record is held by GW's Thomas Blankvoort (who shot 66 in 2002) who appeared on The Golf Channel's "The Big Break IV."
