LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - George Washington junior forward Thomas Stuber tallied a career-high two goals and junior goalkeeper Matt Scheer recorded three saves in his first career start to lift the Colonials' men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Rider on Saturday.
The win is GW's second against a regionally-ranked opponent this season. Rider entered the match ranked eighth in the latest NSCAA North Atlantic region poll. The Colonials defeated American, which was tied for sixth in the Mid-Atlantic region at the time, 2-1 at Mount Vernon on September 13.
Stuber wasted little time getting GW off to a good start in just its second match away from the District this year. The Wisconsin native took advantage of a Rider defensive miscue and found the net from five yards out just 18 seconds into the match to give the Colonials an early lead.
Rider (3-4-2) responded just as quickly, however, as A.J. Parillo scored 18 seconds later to knot the match at 1-1.
Stuber struck the game-winner in the 73rd minute, finishing a shot from 15 yards away on sophomore David Leon's crossing pass. It was Stuber's team-leading third goal of the season and Leon's team-best second assist of the year.
GW (3-4-1) led in shots, 15-8, and shots on goal, 7-4, but was out-cornered, 7-5. Scheer rebounded after allowing the early goal to pick up his first collegiate victory in just his second career appearance in goal. Broncs' goalkeeper Daniel Riverso made five stops in the loss.
The Colonials host their first Atlantic 10 Conference matches of the season next weekend. GW will meet Massachusetts, ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic region, at Mount Vernon on Friday, October 29 at 3:00 pm, before entertaining Rhode Island, tied for seventh in the Mid-Atlantic, on Sunday, October 1 at 1:00 pm.
