HARRISONBURG, VA - The George Washington women's soccer team lost Thursday night at James Madison by a count of 3-0. It marks the first time this season that GW (4-3-0) has lost back-to-back games.
JMU (3-4-0) struck early in the match, when, in the 18th minute, freshman Corky Julien fed senior Sarah Cebulski on a break away. Cebulski beat GW keeper Amie Kern and put away the 8-yard shot in the empty net. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Dukes at the half.
JMU sought to add to their slim lead, and wasted no time in doing so as the second half began. Just a little more than one minute into the period, junior Annie Lowry scored from close range, on an assit from senior Natalie Ewell. The final tally came in the 66th minue when Julien got her own goal of the match. The 3-0 defecit proved too much for the Colonials to overcome. JMU now leads the all-time series 11-1-1, and has won the last 10 straight. The Dukes won last season's meeting, 2-1 in Harrisonburg.
Despite its 2-4-0 record headed into the match against GW, James Madison was ranked 16th in the Mid-Atlantic Region according to SoccerBuzz. Two of the Dukes' losses were against teams that were ranked 7th and 11th by NCSAA (West Virginia and Wake Forest, respectively).
Even though it was a tough loss for the Colonial's, Head Coach Tanya Vogel saw some positives that she hopes to take away from the match. "Despite the two goals we gave up [in the second half], we were out there improving on some mistakes we had made against Georgetown [this past Sunday]. I know the score doesn't reflect it, but, we left that field tonight knowing we got better as a team.
"We're doing our best to not focus on the loss, and instead trying to focus on the things we did right."
Vogel went on to say that after six of its first seven games on the road this year, the team is eagerly awaiting a three-game homestand that begins this Sunday against Vermont. It is a special match for Vogel, who will be opposed by her old college roommate, Vermont head coach Kerry Dziczkaniec (George Washington '93).
The game on Sunday against Vermont is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start time and will be played at Mount Vernon Field.
