Women's Soccer Escapes UMBC With 1-0 Victory

The George Washington women's soccer team (1-0) began their 2006 season in exciting fashion Friday night at UMBC, downing the Retrievers (0-1) with just seconds remaining.
After nearly 90 minutes of action, the game seemed to be headed for extra time, but sophomore Meg Pyle had other ideas. Senior defender Shari Taylor slipped the ball past UMBC sophomore keeper Christine Bacinski, and Pyle was there to drive it home with just thirty-three seconds left on the clock.
Including her goal, Pyle had three shots on goal, but it was the play of the entire 11 that secured the early victory. "This really was an entire team effort tonight," head coach Tanya Vogel said afterwards. "These girls deserve a lot of credit. It was a true testament of their fitness."
The Retrievers tallied 11 shots on goal, narrowly edging the 10 of the Colonial's. GW Red-shirt sophomore goalie Amie Kern kept UMBC off the board while recording five saves. Friday night's win improved the Colonial's record against UMBC to 10-1 all time.
Vogel hopes to continue their winning ways next week when they travel to Villanova. "That game will be a great opportunity for us to play against a perennial top-25 team." Following Tuesday's Villanova game (4PM at the Villanova Soccer Complex), GW will stay on the road and spend next weekend participating in the Marshall Tournament.
