CRCA Names Kate Austin to 2006 All-Region First Team

WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington rower Kate Austin (Madison, WI) was named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-Region First Team for the 2006 season, the association announced Monday. The award recognizes the outstanding performances of rowers from each of the five Division I regions, organized into first and second-team selections.
The CRCA also announced its list of National Scholar Athletes for the 2006 season on Monday. Austin was named to the list along with teammates Liz Gordon (Phoenix, AZ) and Mansi Shah (Mount Laurel, NJ). The award recognizes student-athletes with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher that competed in 75 percent of her team's 2006 spring races. Also, the student-athletes must be upperclassmen (2nd, 3rd, or 4th year) in terms of eligibility and their head coaches must be good standing members of the CRCA.
A total of 135 student-athletes from 50 different schools were honored for their efforts during the 2006 season. The Mid-Atlantic Region produced 44 selections amongst 16 different schools.
"Kate has been an important contributor on our team over the past three years," GW head coach Rob McCracken said. "This award is well deserved recognition for all the hard work she put in during the season. I am extremely proud that Kate, Liz and Mansi have been recognized as CRCA National Scholar Athletes. Their ability to excel both academically and athletically is a reflection of the type of people that they are. It is great to see their achievements recognized."
All three row in GW's Atlantic 10 champion Varsity 8 boat. That crew won the gold medal at the 2006 Atlantic 10 championships April 22 in Camden, NJ. All three were recently named to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Academic team.
Austin, a junior co-captain who rows in the 5 seat, was named the team's MVP as a freshman in 2004 and maintains a 3.81 GPA as a public health major. Gordon, a junior who rows in the 4 seat, has a 3.71 GPA in environmental studies. Shah, also a junior, is the crew's coxswain and maintains a 3.93 GPA as a biology major.
