ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - The George Washington University softball team dropped both games of an A-10 doubleheader at St. Bonaventure, 5-4 and 3-1, Sunday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field. Sophomore leftfielder Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD) led the Colonials at the plate as she had three hits, including her first home run of the season, and three RBI in the two games.
With the losses, the Colonials fall to 20-16 overall, 3-7 in the A-10. The Bonnies improved to 11-12 overall, 4-4 in conference play.
In the opener, GW grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third as junior Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA) took advantage of two Bonnies' errors in the frame and a wild pitch to score the first run of the game.
St. Bonaventure would answer right back in the bottom of the inning, as catcher Anna Nagro delivered a three-run blast to give the Bonnies a two-run lead.
Just as SBU took the lead with one swing the previous inning, Halkiotis did just the same in the top of the fourth to erase the deficit. Sophomore Hilary King (Canal Winchester, OH) walked to lead off the inning and Halkiotis followed with a homer to right center to make it 3-3.
But once again, the Bonnies had an answer scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a two-run single from shortstop Joelle Brunetto to take the lead for good at 5-3. Meyers delivered a two-out RBI single in the sixth for the final margin.
Sophomore Jen Hrycyna (North Brunswick, NJ) tossed a complete game for GW, but gave up five runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts to fall to 4-5 on the season. Halkiotis finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored, while King scored two runs.
The Colonials struck first once again in game two, as Meyers led off with an infield single and later scored on a single from Halkiotis to make it 1-0.
Unfortunately, GW collected just one more hit the rest of the way, a single from Halkiotis in the third, and would not have runners in scoring position until stranding the tying run at second base in the top of the seventh.
St. Bonaventure scored all three of its runs in the fourth, highlighted by Nagro's second home run of the series, a two-run shot to right center, and a solo home run from Lauren Krieger.
In the seventh, King drew a one-out walk and Meyers was hit by a pitch. A groundout allowed Cat Belanger (Monterey, CA), who pinch ran for King, to advance to third and Meyers to second, but Bonnies' starter Christine Keleher closed the door on GW's rally getting Halkiotis to ground out to second to end the game.
Gabby Culp (Desoto, TX) (8-4) was hit with the loss as she allowed three runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of work. Halkiotis finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Meyers and sophomore Caroline Howe (Los Alamitos, CA) each had a single.
GW returns to action when it travels to Farmville, VA, on Tuesday, April 11 for a non-conference doubleheader against Longwood set to begin at 4 p.m.
