Baseball Sweeps La Salle With 13-5 Beating on Sunday

ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team (18-25, 9-7 A-10) pounded out a season-high 17 hits en route to a 13-5 Atlantic 10 Conference victory and three-game series sweep of La Salle University (14-28, 6-11 A-10) Sunday afternoon at Barcroft Park.
GW has now won 20 consecutive games against the Explorers dating back to 2000.
The win moves the Colonials into a three-way tie with Saint Louis University (22-21, 10-8 A-10) and Fordham University (18-26, 10-8 A-10) for the fifth spot in the six-team A-10 Tournament. With nine conference games to play, the stage is set for GW's three-game home series against the Billikens next weekend (May 5-7).
On Sunday, the Colonials jumped out to a 13-1 lead after six innings as nine Colonial hitters recorded at least one hit.
Left fielder Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) had a monster day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three runs, two RBI, two doubles and his team-leading seventh home run of the year.
Second baseman Doug Eizen (Philadelphia, PA / The Haverford School) also posted four hits as the freshman went 4-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Eizen batted .500 for the series going 5-for-10 with four runs.
GW starter RHP Derek Haese (5-2) allowed one run on three hits and struck out five in 6.0 innings of work to collect the win. The junior has now won his first two career starts for the Colonials, allowing one earned run in 12 innings over the two games.
Freshman RHP Tim Sexton (Baltimore, MD / Calvert Hall College) threw the contest's final 3.0 innings for the Colonials and allowed just two hits to pick up his first career save (1).
The Explorers committed five errors in the game that led to seven unearned runs.
RHP Jamie Cowan (2-3) got the spot start for La Salle and lasted 2.0 innings, yielding five earned runs on six hits in the loss.
The Explorers posted a four-run seventh inning that was highlighted by a bases loaded two-run single from catcher Rich Prall.
After starting the conference season 0-5, GW has now won four straight A-10 games, and nine out of its last 11, to become a serious contender for one of the six spots in the A-10 Championship Tournament to be held May 24-28 at Fordham.
GW has not missed the conference tournament in seven years.
The Colonials play two non-conference games this week. The team will welcome George Mason University to Barcroft Park on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) and travel to College Park, MD, to meet Maryland on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
GW's weekend series against Saint Louis will serve as the team's final three home games of 2006.
