COLLEGE PARK, MD - The George Washington University gymnastics team finished with a team total of 191.3 in a dual competition hosted by fellow East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) member Maryland Tuesday evening at the Terps' Comcast Pavilion, but the Terrapins were not to be outdone on their senior night besting the Colonials with a team score of 192.925.
The Colonials finished with marks of 48.15 on vault, 47.25 on bars, 47.15 on beam and 48.75 on floor, which was tops at the dual meet.
GW led off on bars and was led by senior co-captain Tiffany Jones' (Ravenna, OH) 9.675, which placed her third in the event. Fellow co-captain Erin Aiken (Centreville, VA) finished sixth with a 9.6.
In the second rotation, the Colonials were on vault and freshman Kristen Simpson (Surfside, SC) earned top team honors and finished second overall with a 9.8. Senior Amy Stack (Matthews, NC) took fourth with a 9.725, while Aiken was sixth with a 9.65.
On floor exercise, GW's best event of the night, sophomore Carolyn Marckesano (Reston, VA) took home top team honors with a 9.825, which tied a career high, to finish third overall, while Stack and junior Jess Guilbert (Roswell, GA) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with marks of 9.8 and 9.75. Freshman Bree Plotsker (Wantagh, NY) finished in a tie for sixth with a season-high 9.7.
The Colonials closed out the meet on beam and Simpson was the team's top performer with a 9.725, which equaled her collegiate best, to place third overall. Plotsker claimed fifth with a 9.525 and Guilbert seventh with a score of 9.475.
Aiken earned a tie for second in the all-around with the Terps' Rachel Martinez, with both gymnasts posting a total of 38.275. Aiken scored 9.65 on vault, 9.6 on bars, 9.35 on beam and 9.675 on floor.
GW is back in action when it hosts Cal-Berkeley and NC State at Smith Center on Sunday, March 12 at 1 p.m. The three-team meet will mark the final home competition for seniors Erin Aiken, Tiffany Jones, Heather Kaufman and Amy Stack.
