WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University senior co-captain Erin Aiken (Centreville, VA) won the vault and all-around titles, but it wasn't enough as the Colonials fell to visiting Central Michigan, 190.85-190.675, Sunday afternoon at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The all-around title for Aiken marked her second straight.
GW, which was coming off a season-high team total of 194.4 against Towson at home on March 1, posted scores of 48.5 on vault, 48.2 on bars, 46.35 on balance beam and 47.625 on floor.
Aiken captured the vault title, her second of the season, with a season-high mark of 9.825, while senior Amy Stack (Matthews, NC) and freshman Kristen Simpson (Surfside, SC) shared fourth with respective 9.7's.
On bars, senior co-captain Tiffany Jones (Ravenna, OH) made her season debut in the event and was the Colonials' top performer with a 9.75 to finish runner-up. Her younger sister, Cameron Jones (Ravenna, OH), finished in a tie for third with a collegiate-best 9.7. Aiken took fifth with a 9.675.
Freshman Bree Plotsker (Wantagh, NY) led the way for GW on balance beam as she equaled her season high with a 9.675 to claim third. Junior Jess Guilbert (Roswell, GA) took fourth with a 9.575.
Guilbert also led the way for the Colonials on floor, as she finished runner-up in the event with a 9.8 to equal her season high. Senior Heather Kaufman (Austin, TX) finished just behind Guilbert in third place with a 9.775 to tie her season best, while sophomore Carolyn Marckesano (Reston, VA) earned fourth with a score of 9.725.
In the all-around, Aiken won the title with a total of 37.75. She recorded scores of 9.825 on vault, 9.675 on bars, 9.05 on beam and 9.2 on floor.
Central Michigan's victory was highlighted by individual titles in three events: uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, with 9.825 being the winning score in each event.
GW is back in action when it travels to College Park, MD, on Tuesday, March 7, for a dual competition against East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) member Maryland at 7 p.m.
