WASHINGTON, DC - Off to its best start in four years, the George Washington women's basketball team has moved into both the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' and Associated Press Top 25 Polls this week.
GW is off to a 4-1 start for the first time since the 2002-03 season and is in the AP Top 25 for the first time since reaching No. 25 last January. The Colonials jumped from 73 votes in last week's poll to 141 this week, 18 votes better than No. 24 Louisville, which also entered the Top 25 for the first time this year, and 58 more than 25th-ranked Texas.
GW climbed four spots and 53 votes to No. 21 in this week's Coaches' Poll, which was released by the WBCA on Tuesday. The Colonials finished the 2005-06 season at No. 25 in the Coaches' Poll.
The Colonials took two of three games at the BTI Classic in College Park, MD, this past weekend, coming from behind to defeat Arizona, 69-65, and TCU, 82-77, before falling to the host and top-ranked Maryland Terrapins, 73-48, on Sunday. Future GW opponents Tennessee (Dec. 7) and Georgia (Dec. 28) both jumped one spot to No. 4 and No. 8, respectively.
Junior guards Sarah-Jo Lawrence and Kimberly Beck were named to the BTI Classic All-Tournament Team following Sunday's game. Lawrence averaged a team-best 17.3 points on 52.6 percent shooting over the weekend, while Beck added 13.0 points on 9-of-17 shooting from beyond the arc and 6.3 assists per game. Sophomore Jessica Adair (Washington, DC/Anacostia) scored a career-high 22 points in her season-debut against Arizona on Friday and averaged 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in three games.
GW returns to the Smith Center for its next two games. The Colonials host James Madison on Saturday, November 25, at 2:00 pm, and Villanova on Wednesday, November 29, at 7:00 pm.
