WASHINGTON, DC - The 25th-ranked George Washington women's basketball team tips-off play in the BTI Classic, hosted by Maryland at the Comcast Center in College Park, MD, against Arizona on Friday at 5:00 pm.
GW cracked the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Top 25 poll on Tuesday after downing UMBC (72-58) and Coppin State (63-53) to start its season. The Colonials are also just shy of entering the Associated Press Top 25 poll after receiving 73 votes this week.
This marks the first meeting between the Colonials and Wildcats, but is a match-up with interesting asides. Friday's contest will pit three of the five tallest sister combinations in Division I women's basketball between GW's Jazmine and Jessica Adair and Arizona's Beatrice and Suzy Bofia and Rheya and Rhaya Neabors. Also, two of the winningest women's college basketball coaches in the country in GW's Joe McKeown and UA's Joan Bonvicini will square off.
Saturday's 2:00 pm tip-off will mark GW's first meeting with TCU, which is receiving votes in both national polls this week and returns four starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team. The Lady Frogs will open their season against Maryland on Friday after defeating Lake Truck Lines, 75-70, in their lone exhibition.
The Colonials and top-ranked Terrapins will do battle for the fourth time on Sunday at 3:30 pm. GW won the most recent match-up between the two programs, 77-67, at the Smith Center in January 1994. Maryland has won its first two games this season after winning the national title last April.
GW students with a valid GWorld ID will receive $2.00 admission to all BTI Classic games. General admission tickets are $6.00 for adults, $4.00 for youth and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased by calling 301-314-7070 or 800-IM-A-TERP, emailing terptix@umd.edu, or visiting www.umterps.com.
