WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's basketball team has moved to No. 25 in the first regular-season USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll released by the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association on Tuesday.
GW edged Boston College by one point, 65-64, to claim the 25th slot, three points behind No. 24 Kentucky, which lost to Indiana on Sunday and dropped eight spots. The Colonials were tied with Utah with 77 votes in the others receiving votes category in the preseason Coaches' Poll released November 1. Maryland remained No. 1, receiving 28 of a possible 31 first-place votes, while future GW opponents Tennessee (Dec. 7) and Georgia (Dec. 28) both jumped one spot to No. 4 and No. 8, respectively.
Junior Sarah-Jo Lawrence averaged a team-best 17.0 points in GW's season-opening victories over UMBC (72-58) and Coppin State (63-53) last weekend, including a career-high 22 points against the Eagles on Sunday. Five players hit double-figures, led by senior Kenan Cole's 14 points, in the Colonials' victory versus the Retrievers on Friday. GW is receiving votes (73) in the latest Associated Press Poll released yesterday.
The Colonials will play three games in a span of three days at the BTI Classic, hosted by Maryland at the Comcast Center in College Park, MD, this weekend. GW opens with Arizona on Friday at 5:00 pm before facing TCU, which received 22 votes in this week's Coaches' Poll, on Saturday at 2:00 pm and the top-ranked Terrapins on Sunday at 3:30 pm.
GW students with a valid GWorld ID will receive $2.00 admission to all BTI Classic games. General admission tickets are $6.00 for adults, $4.00 for youth and senior citizens.
