GW 63
Coppin State 53
Post-game comments
GW Head Coach Joe McKeown
"Coppin State is a well-coached team. They played the game at a pace that made it hard to get a good flow going. We got it to 18 and I thought we'd blow it open, but you have to give them credit for coming back."
Do you call special plays for Sarah-Jo Lawrence when she's on a shooting streak?
"You just have to try not to limit what she can do because she's so explosive. But you have to keep it in the flow of the offense. She's so athletic, she can create a shot out of nothing. Because she's a junior, we expect her to be more disciplined with that. But when she gets to the basket and is under control, she's fun to watch."
Is Lisa Steele giving you the minutes you want?
"She gives us a big shot in the arm. We just have to get her healthy where she can take more minutes. She played 10 tonight, but I'd like to stretch that. We're going to play three games in three days, and we're going to need her."
Does Jamlla Bates have a different style from your other inside players?
"Her game is better suited to situations where she can use her strength, and get the ball deep and score. She's a powerful rebounder, very strong. She's still learning, but has a great attitude."
Any thoughts on the upcoming BTI Tournament?
"Even though it's early November, to be in a tournament setting with all four teams that are really good is great. Preparing for it will be a challenge because it's hard to recreate that intensity in practice."
Are you concerned about Kim Beck's lack of scoring from the field?
"People are obviously keying on her. She didn't get a lot of good shots today, and those she did seemed to be at the end of the shot clock, just trying to make something happen. She's going to have games like that, but she does whatever she feels is necessary to win. That's what makes her a great point guard."
Junior Whitney Allen
What do you think about the team's progress this season?
"We've made progress over our first two games. I think we're coming together nicely. We have some kinks to work out."
Do you see rebounding as your main role on the team?
"It's part of it. My main role is to go out, hustle, and bring intensity. If I get 11 rebounds, that's great."
Sophomore Jamila Bates
As a sophomore, are you more comfortable in games now?
"It's a lot easier after playing with the team for a whole year. You get to know what each player likes to do. It's easier than last year. It's also a matter of confidence."
Junior Sarah-Jo Lawrence
Do you feel like when you're shooting well, you can take over a game?
"It just happens within the flow of the offense. It just opens up. If [the shot] is there, I'm going to take it. When we're only up 10, we need to get up quick on teams like Coppin State because they can come back."
Junior Kimberly Beck
How are you preparing to play the top-quality guards in your BTI tournament games?
"We'll go over it all in practice and look at the scouting reports, but I think we'll be ready. Coach McKeown will prepare us very well for that. They're the best, but as GW, we can play with the best."
